The consequences of global warming on the environment, biodiversity and climate are already widely felt. Like the chameleon that can change color to camouflage itself, intelligent coatings that adapt to their environment offer real eco-innovative opportunities to meet environmental challenges. 

Ecological and environmental innovation

Climate change, depletion of resources, collapse of biodiversity, multiple forms of pollution: ecological transformation is an urgent necessity. Half of the ecological solutions already exist, but the other half have yet to be invented.

It is through ecological innovation that we can meet these challenges. The environmental shift requires us to rethink the entire value chain: raw material supply, manufacturing processes, anticipating the end-of-life of products, the evolution of future products, etc. This challenge cannot be met without disruptive innovation, without in-depth product transformation. This is the whole GreenTech movement.

Preserving our resources by substituting a raw material

The pigment charge at the origin of a product’s color can become problematic for regulatory, technical, economic or resource depletion reasons. Today, it is more and more frequent to have to change the composition of a product.

To respond to this type of need, we support our industrial partners in their eco-design approach, to substitute raw materials. We exploit one of the components of color intelligence, which allows us to modulate and control the optical response of a material (a matrix). By molecular engineering, we recreate the material within a single material (by successive alloying), or even a mixture of unitary pigments selected, for example, for their natural resources.

Combating heat islands in urban areas

A major research effort is also being devoted to developing an adaptive pavement to combat heat islands in urban environments. Indeed, under the combined effect of increasing urbanization and global warming, heat islands could become more intense in cities. Adaptation and mitigation measures must be taken, a battle in which OliKrom is involved.

Whether it is a paint optimized to better reflect the sun and thus participate in the insulation of buildings, or a coating that creates a barrier to the sun’s UV rays in the summer and prevents the heat from entering, the possibilities are multiple with the world of color intelligence, an art that allows the creation of materials with so-called “cool” colors, to limit as much as possible the interactions with the sun and its consequences on the heating of our cities in the summer.

One of our strengths is our multidisciplinary approach, with complementary skills in materials science, photochemistry, photophysics, etc. This enables our research and development teams to rethink the architecture of a product. Depending on the project, we optimize the albedo of the materials, the coefficients of reflectivity, absorption, emission…

OliKrom’s expertise in the service of the environmental transition

Since 2014, our company has been designing and producing intelligent color-changing materials. We accompany the eco-innovation strategy of many industrial companies, in France and internationally, in particular, in the transport, energy (petrochemical, gas,…), construction and infrastructure sectors such as roads or pipes.

This desire to create innovative solutions that respect the environment came to fruition in 2018 with the development and marketing of our LuminoKrom® photoluminescent road marking.

This paint charges during the day in the sun and lights up at night for more than 10 hours without any electricity consumption or CO2 emissions. It is a technology with a very low environmental impact that replaces public lighting, especially in interurban areas. 

Today, more than 80 local authorities throughout France have deployed this innovation to make pedestrian and cyclist movements safer at night. The first implementations outside our borders are also very successful: Canada, Nigeria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Switzerland…

OliKrom’s voluntary positioning praised by Bpifrance

As a company committed to the ecological transition, OliKrom has become an ambassador of the “Green Coq” community. In May 2021, our company joined other entrepreneurs and start-ups committed to the fight against global warming and the environmental transition.

The Green Coq community was launched by Bpifrance in partnership with ADEME and the Ministry of Ecological Transition. This initiative aims to create a collective emulation in favor of sustainable development.
