In Pessac, a cycle path lights up without street lamps thanks to LuminoKrom®.

In Pessac, two kilometers of cycle path have been equipped with photoluminescent markings developed by OliKrom®. This innovative marking captures natural light or light from headlights, and emits it throughout the night, without the need for electricity. Installed in an area where the installation of public lighting was considered too costly and complex, this solution was chosen as part of the Bordeaux Inno Campus operation, with the support of ADEME via the “Road of the Future” call for projects. This luminous marking is an effective technical alternative for safe cycling in unlit areas.

A supervised full-scale test to validate durability, safety and environmental impact

The system is currently being evaluated under real-life conditions by Bordeaux Métropole, in partnership with OliKrom®, Eiffage and Cerema. The test protocol covers retroreflectivity, slipperiness, durability and possible environmental impacts. Initial observations indicate an improvement in night-time visibility of 50 to 100 meters. While the cost remains higher than that of traditional paints, it is well below that of full street lighting, with no operating costs. Other applications are already being studied: crosswalks, dangerous bends, rural areas. A marketing phase is planned within the year, depending on test results.
