[EUROPE 1] Raphaëlle Duchemin : These French inventing the road of the future

A luminous innovation for soft mobility
Jean-François Létard, President of OliKrom, was a guest on Europe 1’s “La France bouge” program to present his photoluminescent paint technology. Developed in conjunction with the Eiffage group, this innovative paint captures daylight and restores it at night. Tested for the first time in 2018 on a cycle path in Pessac, it serves as a light guide for over 10 hours, without electricity or CO₂ emissions.
An ideal solution in unlit areas, particularly for cyclists, pedestrians and scooter users, faced with darkness due to the extinction of street lighting in many towns. More than just a signage tool, this photoluminescent paint improves visibility up to 80 meters, even in the woods. It helps you anticipate bends and spot hazards on the ground. While it doesn’t replace street lighting, it is a useful and environmentally-friendly complement to it.
Technology for safety and the energy transition
Designed to resist wear and weather, this paint is currently entering the certification phase for widespread use on roads and freeways. Already installed on several bicycle paths in France, it is also aimed at use on crosswalks, traffic circles and danger zones. Jean-François Létard even mentions industrial applications: safety equipment, bicycle helmets, underground parking lots, even smart clothing to increase user visibility. Beyond mobility, these intelligent pigments have a wide range of applications in aeronautics, cosmetics and healthcare. OliKrom’s aim is clear: to use color as a warning, analysis and safety tool. And all this with a strong commitment to the environment, offering a low-energy, sustainable alternative to traditional infrastructures.
