Smart Camouflage … The Latest Breakthroughs in Science

Les pigments développés par la société OliKrom changent d'aspect en fonction de la température, de la luminosité ou de la pression

The army and the French DGA are interested in intelligent pigments manufactured by the Bordeaux company OliKrom. These substances, which can be incorporated into a paint or ink, change color depending on the brightness, pressure, temperature … “We reproduce changes of state and observed chemical reactions in nature. There is nothing magic “, explains Jean-François Létard, the boss of the company.

The OliKrom company was created to respond to the problems of designing smart products capable of changing color, of responding reversibly (or irreversibly) to the action of temperature, light, pressure. Today, after several years of technological maturation, OliKrom masters the intelligence of colors and produces functionalized paints, inks and masterbatches.

This science, which mobilizes photochemists and experts in thermodynamics, does not offer a range of colors as wide as a television screen, but its applications on the battlefield are numerous. In addition to providing effective camouflage for soldiers and vehicles, OliKrom’s pigments change colors under the effect of a laser.

They therefore make it possible to distinguish friendly troops from enemy troops. They could also help identify micro cracks in bulletproof vests or vehicle bodywork. By changing their appearance, they would warn soldiers who have been exposed to toxic substances. Finally, used as a spray, they would serve as a target or a landing marker for a drone …

By definition, camouflage designates any means or device tending to make less visible or to give a deceptive appearance to an object or to a living being. Historically, the shades used to obtain a camouflaging effect are different shades of green, khaki, brown or beige with sometimes gray or black are also used. Today, the universe of smart pigments offers the adaptive dimension, like the Chameleon known for its ability to change color and to camouflage itself in its environment.

Nothing has yet been deployed on the ground, specifies Jean-François Létard. OliKrom just has to put his brainpower to work. S.J
